It's going back to the store. February 3, 2010 JennyJuniper (NC USA) Thanks to another reviewer, I took a good look inside this kettle and yep, there are silicone (?) seals inside the thing. If I'm boiling water--which I do, constantly, as I'm a tea addict--I don't want eau de silicone as an end result. Whichever nasty chemicals make up silicone, I'm pretty sure I don't want to drink them.
So it's going back to the store. Shame on Chef's Choice for making a shoddy product.
Nice product but sent back for the model # 675 February 2, 2010 AZMIKE (USA) I am starting to realize that merely because a product has a larger or newer model # it is not necessarily better. I bought the model #677 because I "assumed" it was better than the #675. But, and I emphasize for OUR purposes, the #675 works better. Mostly because the 675 has the wider opening which makes it easier for cleaning and boiling eggs (thanks Alton Brown). AB recommended the 675, not the 677 and we agree. We returned the 677 and got the 675. Hope this helps.
Chef's Choice 677 Cordless Teakettle January 30, 2010 Raymond L. Betros This item worked as advertised. I bought it because it can be lifted off of the heating element and because it has an automatic shutoff. I love being able to walk away while it heats up and come back later.
Pretty simple: it heats water (and does it well) January 26, 2010 K. Shin This electric kettle does what it's supposed to do. It heats water well. Very quick. Auto shut-off within seconds of the water coming to a boil. It's also very easy to use. You pop open the lid, fill it with water, set the kettle on the base plate, and press the switch down. The switch, which is located at the bottom of the handle lights up orange when the unit is heating. The lid is not removable and opens up like Pacman instead. I wish it was removable so cleaning would be easier, but then again, it's not like I clean it much (use filtered water and the build up won't happen so much) so it's not a deal breaker at all.
I looked around for electric kettles fairly extensively before purchasing and for the price point $~50, this was the best deal out there with the LEAST plastic coming in contact with water. I first purchased a black Krups model but discovered the entire unit is plastic (with a lot of needlessly moving parts in the cap design that would surely break down the road), including the inside where the water boils. I just didn't want to deal with the thought of water boiling in plastic and me drinking any plastic traces. Granted, this kettle is NOT plastic-proof. The water guage is still plastic and comes in contact with water and so is the little mesh screen at the mouth (removable) that acts as a filter as you pour the water out. Ideally the gauge would've been glass and the screen would've been stainless...and had they been, I would've given it 5 stars. I think if you're really serious about having no contact with plastic, go with the Capresso H20 glass kettle. If I were to buy another kettle, I'd probably buy that one, esp since they are similar in price.
Regardless, this is by far the most used appliance I have, I use it many times a day, and it's been working like a champ for the last 2 years. Oh finally, this kettle looks pretty good too and fits in perfectly, esp in modern kitchens with many stainless steel appliances.
burned out January 22, 2010 M. Harrison I enjoyed the convenience and quick boil of this kettle, it worked well but after two years it started making a funky plastic smell for a while and then suddenly stopped working. The electrical cord connection on the underside of the base melted, which is sure sign of a bad build or bad design. It was non-repairable, so I chucked it. The kettle feels kind of cheaply made. Apparently it's a potential fire hazard. I'm looking for a better kettle.
