Cool touch, boiling hot water September 3, 2010 PT Cruiser (CA USA) I bought this electric kettle after our glass one stopped working. I wanted a kettle to heat water quickly for making coffee and tea that didn't have any plastic parts that touched the boiling water. This one has a stainless steel interior and exterior and the lid detaches completely for easy cleaning. There's a little plastic and mesh filter thingy by the pour spout which is easily removed. I didn't really see a need for it. The top flips up with a simple push of a button so you can easily fill the pot to the fill line. It's a little difficult to see the fill line because it's on the inside but not really a big problem. It's simple to flip the lid up when pouring hot water if you want to avoid the plastic.
This pot looks really nice on my counter. The outside stays cool and the water boils quickly. It's cordless so you can easily pick it up from the base. It stays on and continues heating until you flip the on/off switch below the handle on the bottom. I like this feature when I have to add extra water because I don't have to remember to turn it back on. I bought it to use with my 10 Cup Coffee Maker and find that to make a full pot of coffee I have to heat more than one pot. Since the coffee maker is a drip type, this works fine. It takes a little while for the water to drip through the coffee filter so I have another pot ready to go when it's finished.
We also use this pot to heat water for tea and for iced tea. When I make iced tea I heat about a cup of water, and then let the teabags sit in the pot for several minutes until the tea is brewed. I then add ice to fill the pot to the fill line. Some of it melts and makes the best iced tea! It stays cold for a couple of hours with the double sided pot, even on a hot day.
Nice kettle. September 2, 2010 Gilard (PA, USA) The reason I started to shop for a kettle was because my old Philips electric kettle finally died after 7 years of everyday workload. It was plastic, and after reading about the potential hazards of plastic I decided to buy this stainless steel kettle. To my amazement I discovered that the bottom electrical connection between the base and the kettle is exactly the same as it was in my old Philips kettle. So I am hoping that all the electrical components were made by Philips, and hopefully will hold as long as my previous kettle.
The positive features I have to note are:
- The body has a double layered stainless steel. Although the external shell becomes hot to the touch, you cannot get burns from it.
- The outer shell has a brushed stainless steel effect, which hides fingerprints and other stains. That stainless steel fingerprinting problem was one of my concerns.
- The design is contemporary and very stylish.
- You can fill the teapot without even opening the lid, the water just sips inside all around the lid.
- No odor of any kind.
The negative features are:
- The On/Off button is located at the bottom and it takes awhile of boiling time until the switch is tripped.
- The Max level is pretty low, I think you can safely fill it higher. They were probably afraid that the boiling water will get into the steam channel that supposed to turn the switch Off, or if you opened the lid it would touch the water. By the way, you can use the bottom edge of the opened lid as an indicator of the Max level (it is hard to see the actual Max mark on the wall).
Problems that others indicated and I didn't find:
- Dribbling from the spout. I have not seen any. Maybe they changed the design slightly after initial complaints.
- Dripping from the bottom. I saw it only when I overfilled a bit beyond the Max level. I think I understand how it happens. The tiny amount of boiling water gets into the steam channel that supposed to turn the switch Off and is then dripping slightly from the special openings in the bottom near the switch. This should not be concerning you because it is literally couple of drops and only when you boil the whole pot.
- Some complained that it is not boiling water fast enough in comparison to kettles in Europe. The reason for that is that in Europe they use 220V and here in the US is 110V. So the max power they can get from 15 Amps here is about 1500 Watts, which this kettle is doing. In Europe they get more than 3000 Watts, so the water boils really fast. But this is not the problem of this model, this is the inheritant problem with the US electric standard.
The BEST Electric Kettle August 31, 2010 Alexandria Hayes (Stratham, NH USA) After owning several others, I can say without qualification that I love this kettle. Why?
1) Heats as fast as the microwave for equivalent amount of water
2) Lining is one piece of stainless and not subject to rusty heating elements (yuck)
3) Lid completely removes for easy cleaning
4) Double walls prevent burns
I use it all day every day.
Poorly designed August 29, 2010 Stella 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Having only had this product for two weeks, I can't comment on the longevity of the product, but I already have quite a few issues with the model. First, the product is very large and yet the max recommended boiling amount is little more than half the size of the container. Not an efficient use of space. Second, the automatic turn-off switch isn't really useful only a daily basis; it only turns off after the water comes to a incredibly violent boil that rattles the kettle(with half the water evaporating into your wooden cupboards and dewing your countertops). A more minor point is the "cool-touch" surface: I imagine that other stainless steel kettles get painfully hot so this is better as you are unlikely to get burned brushing up against the exterior, but it is by no means cool to the touch as marketed -- more medium hot.
The most frustrating feature is the lid. It must be removed to each time to pour in water and is a terrible hassle to try to latch the little nobs on the side -- even when it is working properly. The lid also is equally difficult to remove. You have to pop it loose with the button on the handle then press another button to remove it from the kettle vertically. Only two weeks and the button on the handle no longer works. I have to bang the lid to release it.
For those interested in all steel experience where the hot water never touches plastic, this is not it. The lid you have to pour through has a plastic underside. To be fair, I researched for a long time and have yet to find this kind of all-ss kettle.
great kettle August 22, 2010 Julia I bought this kettle because its reviews on Amazon were positive; I was not disappointed. It's a very sleek looking design that looks great in my kitchen. More importantly, the stainless steel construction means that there is no plastic taste to the water. At first it may seem that it will be hard to determine water level because there is no see-through gauge, but all it takes is a quick flip of the lid and a glance inside to see how much water there is. Slightly smaller than I had hoped but in the end I realize that this doesn't matter apart from having to boil two pots full to make a large pitcher of iced tea in the summer. The water heats up very quickly to a full rollicking boil. Great kettle!
