3 out of 5 stars Unhappy with customer service   February 8, 2010

I love the looks of this kettle and how quickly it heats the water. However, the kettle I had purchased through Amazon was defective. After the second day of use I found the dry kettle still hot the next morning. Obviously, the safety shut off switch did not work. I called Capresso and was told to send the product back for replacement. My request for free shipment back was denied. I was told this product did not qualify for pre-paid shipping back??? It cost me $14 to return it. So it wasn't that great of a purchase.
My replacement kettle works fine.

5 out of 5 stars I wish there were 10 stars   February 7, 2010

I saw this kettle reviewed on America's Test Kitchen. They picked it as their #1 after saying all stovetop kettles were the same, but you want to pick one that is not plastic (can retain flavors/odors). They said this was their #1 pick because it was entertaining to watch the bubbles. So, I bought it. This kettle is so much more than what I expected. All the stovetop kettles I have used over the years took a few minutes to boil the water. This kettle takes 90 seconds, sometimes less. It is just amazing, and it shocks people when they first see it in action. Honestly, it took a while to adjust to it's speed - you get in a groove and think, OK I have this much time to get my coffee/tea/oatmeal ready while I wait for the water to boil. Then, 90 seconds later, you remember that things are different now that you own this kettle. I could not be happier with my purchase. This kettle cost the same on Amazon as it did elsewhere - but on Amazon, the shipping was monumentally less. On one kitchen supply website, they wanted to charge me $38 for ground shipping!! Not so with Amazon, very inexpensive shipping and it arrived very quickly. I am the most satisfied customer you could imagine - and this transaction typifies Amazon in my opinion: great products and great, inexpensive (but quality) service. I'd give this item and transaction 10 stars if I could.

5 out of 5 stars My test results--The chemical smell is NOT from inside the kettle.   February 7, 2010

I've been using my kettle for several months. I read the reviews here about the chemical odor. I have a very sharp/sensitive nose and tongue. So I tested and checked(sniffed) my kettle carefully. Believe me, the odor so many reviewers were talking about is actually from the plastic handle. Look at the picture of the kettle. It is from the black part of the handle. This handle is completely out of the water you will boil. Since it is attached to the top edge of the kettle and against the glass, it gets a little warm when you are boiling water, thus you can smell the odor more easily.

Here is what I did. I boiled water with the kettle. There was NO chemical taste in the water it boiled. Of course I pour my boiled water into a cup to taste it. No bad taste at all. Then I tried to figue out where the chemical odor came from. When the kettle was cold, I sniffed and found the odor from the black part of the handle. Then I opened the lid and used a towel to cover the handle and lid. I sniffed from the top of the kettle again. This time, NO chemical odor was detected. I even checked the plastic materials used for the handle and the lid. Even they look similar. They are actually different. The material for the handle (which has the chemical odor) feels like a somewhat soft, non-slip material. It gives you a better hold of the kettle. You can actually leave a mark on it if you poke it with your nails. But the material of the lid is hard plastic. It looks like PP (#5 plastic--BPA Free, the same plastic for the new infant bottles). I was glad that the lid was odor-free too.

This kettle boils water very very fast. Faster than my other kettle which is a Breville stainless-steel one.

One more point I want to make is that many kettles claim that they are stainless steel, but they have a clear plastic window for checking water level. So you are actually still boiling water with some plastic. I am a bit OCD myself and I decided to keep this beautiful glass kettle.

1 out of 5 stars plastic smell and taste, may be even harmful for health   February 5, 2010

Boiled water has very strong plastic smell and taste.
Customer service was non-responsive (treated my worries as false)
I think that this smell and taste are outrageous. Should we (this kettle owners) proceed with legal charges?
If somebody has already started, I'll join, since believe that this product may be even harmful for health.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Kettle   January 30, 2010

I've had two of these wonderful kettles and have had no problems with either. The first one I had for two and a half years before it took a trip off of the counter onto a hard floor. I had enjoyed it so much I ordered another one from Amazon that same day. I haven't experienced the bad taste that some reviewers have reported with either of these kettles. I do recommend that you read the tips in the back of the owners manual before using your new kettle.
